Another BMW has been electrified: The iX1 is an all-electric variant of the company’s compact X1 crossover.

Announced on Wednesday alongside the updated X1, the iX1 is an interesting car as it’s poised to compete with the more affordable electric SUVs out there, including the super-popular Tesla Model Y.

The iX1 xDrive30, which is the full name of the only variant BMW has announced at this time, has a dual electric motor delivering a maximum of 313 horsepower. BMW says the car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 5.7 seconds.

The company hasn’t shared many details about the car’s battery, except for saying that it has a high energy density and provides the iX1 with a range of 257 – 272 miles (note, however, that these are WLTP numbers, and all the figures are predicted values, based on the car’s current stage of development).

BMW hasn’t done any massive changes to the car’s exterior (that, thankfully, includes the front grille which has remained fairly small), though people will notice that you’re driving an electric BMW thanks to the blue design elements on the front and rear bumper, as well as on the side steps.

There’s no word on price or availability for the BMW iX1, though we should know more when it officially launches in October 2022.
